In-House Testing

As we work in partnership with Gov. DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health to respond to this growing health crisis, UF Health now has the in-house capability to test its patients for the coronavirus. Testing will be available for patients by referral at facilities across the UF Health system, from Gainesville to Jacksonville to The Villages to Leesburg and beyond.

Our pathology laboratories are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to quickly ramp up this internal testing capacity. Internal testing means far quicker turnaround in obtaining results — we hope 24 hours or less. Test results sent to commercial labs, for example, can take three to four days. This will hopefully enable UF Health to react more quickly to this growing epidemic.

Testing numbers are dependent on a factor beyond our control: the availability of the chemicals necessary to run the U.S. Centers for Disease Control testing kits we are using.

Testing numbers are dependent on a factor beyond our control: the availability of the chemicals necessary to run the U.S. Centers for Disease Control testing kits we are using. These chemicals, as you can imagine, are in short supply nationally and even internationally. We are working with vendors to secure an ongoing supply of the ingredients we need.
